ELEANOR BURNETTE  was an African American artist born 1944 in Chicago.  She earned a BA in Fine Art from Chicago State University (1976)  Burnette moved to Princeton, NJ in 1978.  She attended the New School with Chaim Gross and had a 2-year apprenticeship at Johnson Atelier where she learned mold making and bronze casting (1978-80).  Eleanore Burnette spent three years In RI at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design).  She Exhibited at Virginia Lynch Gallery, Tiverton, RI in group shows along with Chuck Close and Robert Motherwell.   And finally, she earned a fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center.

Burnette's final series was the Middle Passage (slave ships and slavery trade).  It is a combination of sculpture and painting.  She created individual figures by hand and grouped them in lines to mimic chained Africans in the holds of ships and the slavery auctions.  At her last exhibition of the Middle Passage Series before she died, Maya Angelou purchased “White Seas, Less Light”.  Eleanor Burnette died in Princeton in 2020.
